I made the decision to give up owning a car several years ago due to the constant frustration of never finding parking near my house. Additionally, I realised I didn't use the car enough to justify the expense. That's when I transitioned to using Co Wheels car-sharing club, and it has been a fantastic solution for me. Having access to a car when I need it feels like a special privilege, and I make the most of it by exploring places that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Badminton House: a historical stately home and wedding venue
Recently, after wrapping up a wedding at Clearwell Castle, I stumbled upon an exciting opportunity. Badminton House, the majestic residence of the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort, was hosting one of its three open days on June 25th, conveniently on my way back home. This magnificent estate has not only been featured in popular Netflix shows like Bridgerton and The Remains of the Day but also serves as a stunning wedding venue.
Immersed in colours: exploring the picturesque gardens of Badminton House
As I followed the directions given by the friendly volunteers, I was immediately captivated by the warm, pastel peachy gold stonework of the grand country mansion. Walking through the arched entrance on the right side, I came across a variety of pop-up stalls offering refreshing teas, coffees, ice creams, pastries, and even beautiful garden plants and I bought a delicious sausage roll for my lunch. Many visitors were taking a break, enjoying picnics by the serene lake. The scene reminded me of a Seurat impressionist painting, with its vibrant colors and relaxed ambiance.
A masterpiece of botanical splendour: exploring the diverse gardens
I couldn't resist the allure of exploring the gardens and decided to bypass the room selling cream teas. The path led me through a seemingly faded corridor, which opened up to a burst of vibrant English flowers and some of the most breathtaking gardens I've ever laid eyes on. The gardens showcased a perfect blend of open spaces and meticulously designed formal areas. Everywhere I looked, I was greeted by the enchanting sight of roses, campanulas, and a myriad of pastel and brightly colored flowers set against the lush green backdrop. The gardens were cleverly divided into distinct "rooms," each with its own unique character. From the understated charm of the shell garden (a hidden gem often overlooked) to the elegance of the rose gardens and the precise geometric patterns of the formal gardens adorned with box hedges, water fountains, and elegant planters, Badminton House's gardens were a visual masterpiece from every angle.
Unique attractions: the natural pool and whimsical carved hedges
Just when I thought the experience couldn't get any better, I made my way to the side of the church and discovered a natural swimming pool in front of the orangery. Playful box hedges, meticulously carved with dogs and other elements, added a touch of whimsy to the scene. Once again, I couldn't help but feel like I had stepped into a Seurat painting, reluctant to tear myself away from the sheer beauty that surrounded me.
Wandering through Badminton House's gardens was like entering a living masterpiece. From the shell garden to the rose gardens, every 'room' had its own captivating charm.

I felt like I had stepped into a Seurat painting at Badminton House. The pastel flowers, geometric gardens, and natural swimming pool were pure magic.
Picture-perfect moments: romantic photography opportunities in the gardens
A short distance away, I stumbled upon a beautiful shaded area adorned with soft white and pink flowers spilling around a charming planter. In an instant, I envisioned how perfect this spot would be for a couple's wedding pose. As I continued around the east side of the house, two summer houses emerged, enveloped in a cascade of gorgeous pink flowers and lavender. From this vantage point, an expansive green grassland stretched as far as the eye could see. Curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn't resist peeking through an open window, wondering if I would ever have the opportunity to explore the interior.
The Walled Garden: A sensory explosion of flowers and greenery
Although the natural pool and the area near the church were perhaps my favourites, I couldn't pass up the chance to visit the Walled Garden. A short stroll away, it welcomed me with its abundance of sweet peas, country flowers, and flourishing vegetables. The Walled Garden was a true delight for the senses. Crisscrossed by winding paths that spanned the length and width of the garden, it not only offered a sense of being part of a magnificent painting but also showcased how each individual plant was thoughtfully or even seemingly randomly placed to complement one another.

Visiting Badminton House was truly a treat for the soul, and I wholeheartedly recommend it as a day out if the weather is good. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a serene escape, this hidden gem has something for everyone.
